Hypervalent iodine reagents

Hypervalent iodine reagents, although known already as early as in 19th century, represent a family of compounds that are receiving more interest in the synthetic organic community. Formally behaving as oxidants and hypernucleofuges, they are excellent tools for formally electrophilic or oxidative transfer of the groups attached to hypervalent iodine center.

High reactivity of hypervalent iodine compounds enables their use under exceptionally mild conditions, while addition of transition metal catalysts or organocatalysts can activate otherwise unreactive substrates or divert the reaction pathways in a desired way.
